Thanks to Art Borum of Kaskaskia College for pointing me to a great article by Patrick Marshall (no relation) titled How LiDAR is Revolutionizing Maps and Geospatial data. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), which uses laser beam pulses to measurement of elevation, truly is a transforming technology.
Thanks to Gene Roe and LiDAR News for sharing the following video on the new state-of-the-art Riegl LMS-Q1560. This sensor will collect LiDAR, true color, and infrared at the same time. Seems like we are well overdue for a sensor system that can collect all that we need on one pass instead of having to go back multiple times. And, Riegl has integrated it into a new aircraft and is selling a turnkey system. I like the camera, but I am not sold on the aircraft. The sensor system looks very promising:
Attended the USTRANSCOM Defense and Intelligence GIS User Group today out at Scott AFB. I saw some great demonstrations including the Excelis VIS demo of ENVI LiDAR. It looked like some great software. I think I will try out an evaluation copy.
